Tic Tac Toe, also known as noughts and crosses, is one of the oldest and best-loved strategy games in the world, and now you can play it free online. Two players take turns placing an X or an O on a 3×3 grid. The first to get three of their marks in a row, across, down or diagonally, wins the round. If all nine squares are filled and nobody has a line, the round is a draw.

This version gives you three ways to play. Easy mode is a relaxed computer opponent that sometimes misses a chance, which makes it great for kids and beginners. Hard mode uses a perfect strategy and cannot be beaten, so a draw is the best result you can get. 2 Players mode lets you play against a friend on the same phone, tablet or computer. Who goes first switches every round, and a scoreboard keeps track of wins and draws.

How to Play Tic Tac Toe

• Choose vs CPU Easy, vs CPU Hard or 2 Players at the top.
• Tap or click an empty square to place your mark. You are X against the computer.
• Get three in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally to win.
• If the board fills up without a line, the round is a draw.
• Press New round to play again. The first move alternates each round.
• Keyboard players can use the number keys 1–9, laid out like a number pad.

Tips and Strategy for Tic Tac Toe

When you move first, take the centre or a corner. The centre is part of four possible lines, more than any other square, and corners are part of three. Edge squares are the weakest opening because they only belong to two lines.

The strongest trick in the game is the fork: a move that creates two different ways to win at once. Your opponent can only block one, so you win with the other. A common way to set one up is to take two opposite corners. On defence, always block an opponent’s two-in-a-row first, and watch out for them setting up a fork of their own. Against Hard mode, playing perfectly means every game ends in a draw. That is how the game works when both players make no mistakes.
