About Five Letters

Five Letters is a free online word guessing game. A secret five-letter word is hidden, and you have six tries to find it. After each guess, every letter changes colour to give you a clue. Green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different spot. Grey means the letter is not in the word at all. Use the clues to narrow it down and solve the puzzle in as few guesses as you can.

How to Play Five Letters

Tips and Strategy for Five Letters

Start with a word that uses common letters, especially vowels and letters like R, S, T, L and N. Words such as CRANE, SLATE or AROSE test five useful letters at once. For your second guess, try five completely new letters. Two good opening guesses usually reveal most of the letters in the answer.

Once you have some green and yellow letters, think about where the yellow ones could go. A yellow letter cannot be in the spot where it turned yellow, so move it somewhere new. Remember that words can repeat letters. If you are stuck on a word like _ _ I _ E, letters you have not tried yet, such as double letters, are often the answer.
